A BLACK AND WHITE JADE ‘BUDDHIST LIONS’ PENDANT, 18TH CENTURY

Expert’s note: This carving is not only impressive for the striking contrast between the black and white sections of the jade, which are rarely found to match the depiction so well, but also for its highly detailed incision work.
China. Intricately carved and reticulated to depict two confronting Buddhist lions with a neatly incised billowing ribbon, the animals well detailed, the stone of a translucent white and opaque black tone with cloudy inclusions, the different shadings of the stone masterfully utilized by the lapidary.
Provenance: French trade.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear, microscopic nicks, and the stone with natural inclusions and fissures.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
