Lot details

Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by Oxford Authentication on 26 July 2012, based on sample number C112g84, sets the firing date of two samples taken between 1000 and 1600 years ago. A copy of the report, signed by Doreen Stoneham for Oxford Authentication, accompanies this lot.

China, 581-907. Well modeled standing upright with fists clenched as if to hold a standard, the face with well-defined features, eyes gazing ahead, a studded leather cap atop his head, wearing a short tunic and a breastplate with two roundels enclosing faces. Covered in a straw glaze with a greenish tint ending shortly above the base.

Provenance
: From an English private collection in the Peak District.
Condition: Good condition with some wear, glaze flakes, expected firing flaws, small firing cracks, some touch-ups to the glaze, the weapon missing, and part of the base reattached. One hand is pierced at the top, suggesting a now-lost implement was once inserted there.

Weight: 1,406 g
Dimensions: Height 40.3 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related figure of a warrior, 37.3 cm high, dated to the 7th century, in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, accession number 1923-21-43.
