A GREEN GLAZED ‘CHICKEN HEAD’ EWER, TANG TO LIAO DYNASTY
唐至遼代綠釉鷄頭罐

Lot details

China, 618-1125. The baluster body tapering towards the foot, surmounted by a flaring rim, set with an arched handle with three knobs, terminating in a dragon head. The spout in the form of a chicken head, the neck with three ribs, two lines incised at the shoulder. The body covered in a dark green glaze suffused with fine crackles, stopping well above the foot to reveal the buff ware.

Provenance
: From the collection of R. Marian Hicks, OBE, who was a professor at the School of Pathology and Department of Oncology at Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London. She was an avid collector of Tang and Song dynasty ceramics and her noted collection also included Chinese bronzes, textiles, and rank badges.
Condition: Very good condition commensurate with age showing old wear, few small nicks, and manufacturing flaws including pottery lines, firing flaws, and glaze recesses. The glaze with intentional crackling, minor oxidation and extensive weathering, as expected from an authentic ceramic ewer of this period.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
