Lot details

Well potted with a wide circular flange surmounting a columnar body, above a two-tiered stepped foot, covered with a white slip stopping above the bottom tier of the foot, exposing the pale buff body, the everted rim with a dark brown foliate design above the white slip, the upper body further decorated with leaves.

Provenance
: Collection particulière Versailles, France.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few small chips, and manufacturing flaws including dark spots and kiln grit.

Expert's note (added 18.2.2023): The term 'zhou' refers to a historical concept of geographical areas in China separated by an administrative or political division. A few miles to the west of the Cizhou kilns lies the 'Ci' mountain. It is from this area where the magnetite was mined for the pottery made in the kilns, and it is this magnetite that is responsible for the remarkable strength of Cizhou pottery and its distinct metallic lustre.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
