Lot details

Expert’s Note: Silversmith Gan Sheng (active c. 1895-1930) operated in Hong Kong, known for his discerning eye for style and quality. He skillfully blended Chinese decorative motifs with neoclassical Western forms. His mark is rare today; see, for example, a four-piece tea and coffee set with an oval tray sold at Christie’s London, 22 May 2012, lot 119. For more information on Gan Sheng, refer to Adrien von Ferscht's Chinese Export Silver 1785-1940 – The Definitive Collectors’ Guide, 4th Edition, 2015, p. 275.

China, c. 1895-1930. The deep rounded sides of the solid silver vessel are supported on a tall spreading foot and rising to a slightly everted rim above a double bow-string band. The exterior is finely embossed in high relief above a punched ground and neatly chased with chrysanthemum blossoms and curling petals borne on long stems, issuing small buds and furled leaves.

One side with a shield-shaped cartouche, originally designed to hold the initials of the first owner, but left blank.

Inscriptions: The base with the maker’s mark ‘Gan Sheng’ of Hong Kong and the retailer’s mark ‘Yok Sang’ of Shanghai.

Provenance: British trade. By repute acquired from a private estate in the United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and minuscule manufacturing irregularities.

Weight: 577 g
Dimensions: Diameter 20.5 cm

With an old fitted wood stand raised on three scroll-form legs. (2)

Literature comparison:
Compare a related Yok Sang silver bowl with similar chrysanthemum decoration, dated circa 1895, at Michael Backman Ltd., inventory number 6231.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
