A LARGE AND RARE BRONZE HEAD OF GUANYIN, SONG DYNASTY OR EARLIER

China, 960-1279. Powerfully and heavily cast, the serene face skillfully modeled with downcast eyes below arched brows, a broad nose, and full lips forming a calm smile. Her finely incised hair is parted in the middle and pulled up into a tall curling chignon secured by a band with the ends trailing down over her long pendulous earlobes, the foliate tiara centered by a diminutive figure of the Buddha Amitabha.
Provenance: From a private collection in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, losses, casting flaws, nicks, scratches. The bronze is covered in a fine, naturally grown, dark patina.
Weight: 10.7 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 42.5 cm (excl. stand) and 45 cm (incl. stand)
Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze head of a bodhisattva, with similar face, hair, and tiara albeit centered by three Buddhas, dated to the Sui dynasty, 6th-7th century, in the Museo d’Arte Cinese ed Etnografico, Parma.

For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.

Galerie Zacke is thrilled to present a two-day live auction event showcasing 700 works of art from China, Southeast Asia, India, and beyond.
The flagship auction will take place on Day 1 of the sale (lots 1-278) and features an inspired selection of impressive pieces from notable collections. Highlights include an important white marble torso of Buddha Maitreya from the Tang dynasty (lot 38), a magnificent pair of Imperial zitan ‘elephant’ stands likely originating from the Forbidden City or Summer Palace (lot 89), and an extremely rare gold rain drum from the ancient kingdoms of Cham (lot 238).
The general auction will follow on Day 2 (lots 279-700), offering opportunities for both seasoned collectors and new bidders.
Museum Deaccessions include the Wou Lien-Pai Museum and the Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum.

As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our auctions fair and transparent, we encourage you to read our terms and conditions thoroughly. We urge you to read through §34-50) to ensure you understand them. These terms are specifically designed to protect all serious and committed buyers from bidding against non-payers who attempt to inflate prices without the intent of paying their auction bills.

The main points include the following:
- Bidders must complete their due diligence and clarify all questions about the objects before the auction. After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
- A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
- A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.
