A PUCE-ENAMELED BALUSTER VASE, QING DYNASTY
清代胭脂紅釉瓶

Sold for €3,900

including Buyer's Premium

Lot details

China, 1644-1912. Delicately potted, rising from a spreading foot to a waisted neck with an elegantly everted rim, the exterior is evenly covered in a fine puce enameling which has developed an unusually even, microscopic crackling over time. The enameling stops evenly, short of the white-glazed interior.

Provenance: From an old private collection in Ukraine, and thence by descent to the present owner.
Condition: Excellent condition with only minor surface wear and firing irregularities.

Weight: 232.7 g
Dimensions: Height 20 cm

The recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi within a double circle.

Expert’s note: According to the present owner, the vase was inspected by a curator of the British Museum, who was unable to eliminate the possibility that the vase dates from the 18th century. The curator noted the extremely fine, even enameling as well as the microscopic crackling which is found throughout, both of which are distinct signs of age.
