清代模印如意蝙蝠粉青釉盤

Sold for €1,690

including Buyer's Premium

Lot details

China, c. 19th century. The porcelain delicately potted with shallow flared sides supported on a circular foot, the interior finely carved with a central medallion formed from three beribboned charms including a double gourd, nandina berries and a ruyi scepter, surrounded by three flying bats and scrolling cloud clusters, the exterior with stylized plantain lappets radiating from the foot ring, covered overall in a translucent pale celadon glaze.

Provenance: British trade.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, including pitting, light surface scratches.

Weight: 269.5 g
Dimensions: Diameter 14.9 cm

The recessed base with an underglaze-blue six-character seal mark da Qing Qianlong nianzhi.

Expert’s note: Earlier versions from the Yongzheng period were the prototype for this group of dishes. Qianlong examples tend to be smaller in size, inscribed with six-character seal marks, covered in a more bluish glaze, and are generally of lesser quality. They are also potted in a rather sturdy manner. While it is not fully clear to what extent the production of these dishes was continued after the Qianlong period, it seems fair to assume that they were made for a long time, with decreasing levels of quality, and probably well into the Republic era. For an example of the Yongzheng-marked prototype, see Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 12 October 2021, lot 20.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 3 October 2018, lot 3641
Estimate: HKD 500,000 or approx. EUR 67,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A pair of carved pale celadon-glazed washers, seal marks and period of Qianlong
Expert remark: Compare the closely related design, form, carving style, glaze and similar size (11 cm). Note that this pair of dishes may actually also date from the 19th century, which could explain why it was unsold.
