A HEAVY PARCEL-GILT BRONZE ‘SHOULAO AND DEER’ WEIGHT, 17TH-18TH CENTURY
十七至十八世紀局部鎏金壽老銅鎮

Lot details

China, late Ming to early Qing dynasty. Depicting the God of Longevity sitting on the back of a recumbent deer, while holding a scroll in his right hand, dressed in fine robes, the pleats falling elegantly on the ground, his face with a joyful expression, the mouth agape, framed by a long beard, the downcast eyes below gently arched eyebrows, his hair tied to the back. The deer raising his head with its mouth open, with one leg lifted. The back with a heart-shaped recess, the interior filled with lead.

Provenance: From a German private collection.
Condition: Good condition with extensive wear to gilt, minor casting irregularities, losses to deer antlers, minor nicks and dents, few light surface scratches.

Dimensions: Height 9.2 cm

The theme of longevity is clearly evident in the present lot. Shoulao is one of the three star gods of Daoism and represents longevity. The deer (lu) is both a homophone for riches or official emolument and a symbol of longevity and wealth.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
