A SANCAI-GLAZED APPLIQUÉ-DECORATED POTTERY JAR, TANG DYNASTY

Lot details

China, 618-907. Rising from a splayed foot to a short rim, the sides decorated with two bands of flowers and conch shaped medallions, splashed overall with emerald-green, chestnut, and straw-colored glazes pooling over the sides and stopping irregularly above the foot, exposing the white slip. The base unglazed.

Provenance: Collection of Senator Hugh Scott. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, donated from the above, accession number 91.442 (inscribed to base). Collection of Steven J. Harvis, New York, acquired from the above. A label ‘Steven J. Harvis Collection 175 New York’ to the base. Hugh Doggett Scott Jr. (1900-1994) was an American lawyer and politician. He represented Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, and served as Minority Leader from 1969 to 1977. Steven J. Harvis was a Manhattan attorney for 50 years and built an international law firm as the senior partner. He has been collecting, studying and dealing in Chinese works of art from the Shang Dynasty through the Republic Period for more than 35 years. His relationship with the Chinese art departments at the major New York auction houses including Christie’s and Sotheby’s goes back over 30 years.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age and as expected from an authentic Tang dynasty vessel. With old wear and some firing flaws, glaze flaking as visible on images, few minuscule nicks and losses.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
