A LIMESTONE FIGURE OF DURGA, NEPAL, 15TH - 17TH CENTURY

Lot details

The four-armed deity seated in dhyanasana atop a lotus base, the primary left hand at the chest, the other left hand raised holding a lotus flower, adorned in beaded jewelry and bangles, the face with a serene expression and heavy-lidded eyes, flanked by elongated earlobes suspending floral earrings, the hair in a high chignon behind a floral tiara, backed by a mandorla with a beaded frame.

Provenance
: From an old private collection of a diplomat in Zagreb, Croatia.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, extensive wear, obvious losses, nicks, scratches, some fissures, signs of weathering and erosion. The stone with a fine patina and an unctuous feel overall, the surface nicely worn from centuries of worship.

Durga is a major Hindu goddess, worshipped as a principal aspect of the mother goddess Mahadevi. She is associated with protection, strength, motherhood, destruction, and wars. Her legend centers around combating evils and demonic forces that threaten peace, prosperity, and dharma, representing the power of good over evil. She is seen as a motherly figure and often depicted as a beautiful woman with many arms riding a lion or tiger, each arm carrying a weapon and often defeating demons.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
