Lot details

China, 13th to 16th century. The rectangular panel finely painted in turquoise, salmon, red, and orange, accentuated with black, depicting the bodhisattva seated in lalitasana on a lotus throne above a stepped pedestal, dressed in flowing robes open at the chest and adorned with billowing scarfs, the left leg supported on a footrest, the face with a serene expression, surmounted by a floral tiara, and backed by two circular mandorlas. The background with scrolling clouds.

Provenance
: From a noted Hungarian private collection.
Condition: Commensurate with age, old wear and weathering, some losses, expected age cracks with associated fills, touchups.

Dimensions: Image size 70.9 x 41.8 cm, Size incl. mounting 84.7 x 55.2 cm

Framed behind glass. (2)

Expert's note (added 12.2.2023): A colleague has indicated to us that several panels closely related to the present lot are in the collection of the Musée Guimet in Paris, France, accessioned with the mission Paul Pelliot (1906-1909), EO1122, EO1123, EO3665, EO 3666. The panels originally come from Kucha, Duldur-Aqur, Xinjiang, and date to the 6th century. The pigments, the structure of the stucco, and the painting - most notable the jewelry that the deities are wearing - all bear a striking similarity to the present lot. For this reason, a significantly earlier dating than the above seems at least reasonable, if not imperative.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related fresco of deities, 5.41 x 2.36 m, Ming dynasty, in the Penn Museum, object number C492.

Auction result comparison:
