A PAIR OF LARGE POTTERY GUARDIAN FIGURES, WUSHIYONG, TANG DYNASTY
唐代一對大型武士俑

Lot details

China, 618-906. Standing with the body slightly turned to the left, one hand stretched forward with palm open and the other with fist clenched to hold a weapon, wearing a pointed cap and armor with ornate design at the chest and two shoulder applications in the form of beast masks. The faces with fierce expressions and neatly incised eyes. (2)

Provenance: A New England private collection. New York trade, acquired from the above.
Condition: Some repair, fills and touchups as generally expected from Tang dynasty excavations. Losses, fissures, cracks, and encrustations. Some firing flaws, such as firing cracks, glaze flakes, and dark spots. Remnants of pigment. Presenting remarkably well overall.

Literature comparison:
Compare two similarly attired guardian figures, with equally stern expressions, excavated from Tang dynasty tombs in Luoyang, Henan province: one from the tomb of Li Yanzhen, buried in 709, illustrated in Kaogu, 1984:10, pl. 6:3; the other from the tomb of Li Siben, also buried in 709, illustrated in Kaogu xuebao, 1989:3, pl. 2:2.

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
