‘LADIES AND QIN ON A SUMMER DAY’ BY HU XIGUI, DATED 1881

Lot details

China. Ink and watercolor on paper, with a silk brocade mounting. Depicting a lady dressed in multiple colorful layers, looking back to her attendant who is carrying a qin, set in a garden scene with rockwork, trees, and bamboo.

Inscriptions: Upper right inscribed with extracts of two poems, dated ‘on a summer day in the year of Xinsi’, signed ‘by Sanqiao Hu Xigui’ (1881), one seal, ‘Sanqiao’.

Provenance
: British trade.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, little foxing, a minuscule tear.

Dimensions: Image size 93 x 41.5 cm, Size incl. mounting 196.5 x 56.6 cm

Hu Xigui (1839-1883), also known as Sanqiao, was a native of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. He learned to paint at an early age and integrated the methods of various schools of thought. Hu Xigui is famous for his unmatched vivid brushwork. Apart from painting, Xigui also excelled in singing, poetry, and calligraphy.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
