Lot details

China, circa 1900. Finely embroidered in Beijing knot and satin stitch with sprays of peaches, grapes, Buddha’s hand citron, peonies, and stylized bats, the hem with shou medallions, bats, endless knots, and foliage above a black ground. The interior with green silk. The sleeves decorated with precious objects and peonies issuing from vases interspersed with the eight Buddhist treasures.

Provenance: From the private collection of Tilla Durieux. Tilla Durieux (1880-1971), born Ottilie Godefroy, was an Austrian actress. After studying piano and acting in Vienna, she went to Berlin where she achieved her acting breakthrough in 1903. Durieux was an enthusiastic collector. During her marriage with Paul Cassirer, a highly influential art dealer and critic, she developed a true passion for art. The couple’s collection included many masterpieces, including several noted works by Vincent Van Gogh.
Condition: Good condition overall with some wear, minor tears, loose thread and open seams, fading and minimal soiling.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
