Lot details

China, 1875-1908. The ovoid body supported on a short foot and rising to a tall cylindrical neck, finely carved through the outer ruby-red layer to one side with a scholar raising a bag toward the sky below a bat with a lingzhi sprig in its mouth, his youthful attendant with a similar offering, and to the other with the same scholar and attendant walking through a rocky landscape amid pines, lingzhi, and swirling clouds. One rock carved with a three-character inscription in relief. The base with an incised minuscule four-character mark Guangxu nianzhi and of the period.

Inscriptions: To one side, ‘Shihejin’ (possibly a studio name).

Provenance: From the collection of Chip and Muffy Matthews, St. Louis, USA. Churchill “Chip” Matthews, Jr. (1940-2021) and Martha “Muffy” Matthews were American collectors of Chinese snuff bottles who traveled extensively. Chip was a US army veteran, who founded the noted medical company Wrymark Inc. in 1989. In 2013, their private garden was featured by St. Louis Homes and Lifestyles as the ‘Garden of the Year’.
Condition:
Excellent condition with only minor old wear and some expected manufacturing irregularities.

Stopper: Copper alloy with metal fitting and spoon
Weight: 78 g
Dimensions: Height incl. stopper 70 mm. Diameter neck 17 mm and mouth 6 mm

Expert’s note (added 26.2.2023): The scenery depicted on this bottle evokes the idyllic concept of the "Pursuit of the Peach Blossom Garden." This is a mythical utopia where people live in perfect harmony with nature, and it became a symbol of tranquility for scholars and artists after it appeared in the eponymous poem by Tao Yuanming, a renowned poet from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420). The Peach Blossom Garden represents a place of eternal life where the legendary peaches of immortality are said to grow, adding to its mystique. The ethereal beauty of this paradise, as captured on the bottle's design, is a testament to the enduring allure of this mythic land, which has inspired the imagination of generations of people.
