Lot details

China. Well hollowed, of rounded square form, rising from an oval foot to a straight neck with concave lip, the honey-brown inclusion carved on one side with a horse tethered to a post, a monkey perched on its back, the details finely incised, the reverse plain to highlight the fine markings of the stone. The translucent stone of a creamy pale-honey color with bands and shadings of amber as well as dark inclusions.

Provenance: Millon Jutheau, Paris, 24 April 1983, lot 167. French private collection, by repute acquired from the above (invoice lost). Thence by descent within the family to the last owner.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor old wear, minuscule nibbling to mouth and rim.

Stopper: Coral with metal fitting, the cabochon showing some cracks
Weight: 145.6 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 87 mm. Diameter neck 28 mm and mouth 9 mm

Monkeys and horses are popular motifs in Chinese art. Shown together they symbolize the wish for immediate success, whereas a horse tethered to a post forms a common rebus which expresses a wish for speedy promotion of young candidates.

Intended Spend and Bid Limits

When you register to bid in an online auction, you will need to share your intended maximum spending budget for the auction. We will then review your intended spend and set a bid limit for you. Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
