Lot details

China, 1800-1870. The bottle is crisply and deeply molded overall and painted in famille rose enamels and gilt with a continuous palace garden scene depicting court ladies with children playing and frolicking, enclosed by a blue fence, and surrounded by banana trees, and craggy rocks. The neck with a blue band above a rose key-fret border, the rim around the mouth painted in gilt, the foot with a blue border with circles. The recessed base with an apocryphal iron-red four-character seal mark Qianlong nianzhi.

Condition: Some old wear and manufacturing flaws, few minuscule nibbles, the foot with a small repair.

Stopper: Glass imitating coral, with metal collar
Weight: 80 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 86 mm. Diameter neck 14 mm and mouth 8 mm.

The molding of porcelain was standard practice at Jingdezhen long before the snuff-bottle period. Molding allows for easy mass production and is well suited to the manufacture of porcelain. Instead of forming or decorating each individual piece, a carver uses a single mold, from which many identical pieces can be turned out. The use of complex molds for snuff bottles, which included extensive relief decoration and dictated the entire form of the bottle, flourished as an art from the late Qianlong period well into the Jiaqing and Daoguang reigns.
