A FINE FIVE-CASE YAMIMAKI LACQUER INRO DEPICTING THE FIFTY-THREE STATIONS OF THE TOKAIDO ROAD

Of upright rectangular form, superbly decorated with gold and yamimaki-e (black on black lacquer) and with gold hiramaki-e. The 53 Tokaido station signs are spread across the entire inro from the front and back side to the top and bottom of the case. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.
With an amber ojime.
LENGTH 4.6 cm, HEIGHT 9.1 cm
Condition: Very good condition. A fine hairline to the fourth case. Very minor wear and light traces of use.
Provenance: Maurice Champoud Collection, collection no. 157 (according to label to the interior top case). Subsequently de-accessioned from the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum, Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 2000 by Masayuki Murata, the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum aims to increase the appreciation of Japanese art from the 19th to early 20th century and provide a source of inspiration for contemporary artisans.
The 53 Stations of the Tokaido (Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi) were the key post stations along the historic Tokaido road, the vital route connecting Edo (modern Tokyo) and Kyoto during the Edo period. Established by the Tokugawa shogunate, these stations provided rest stops for travelers, merchants, and feudal lords making their mandated journeys between the two cities.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
