Provenance
: House of Bergenstråhle, which is an old Swedish noble family with members including Johan Bergenstråhle (1756-1840), a noted Swedish military officer, and Lars Johan Bergenstråhle (1935-1995), a famous Swedish film director.

Hung Chong & Co. was a prominent, Shanghai-based silversmith and retailer, operating between 1830 and 1925. The company specialized in high-quality silver ware, blackwood furniture, as well as embroideries and silks. Alongside Wang Hing and Woshing, it was one of the most prestigious manufacturers and well-known for its elaborate designs and unusual shapes. Their silver pieces attracted the attention of customers from all over the world. (Information courtesy of Dr Adrien von Ferscht; www.chinese-export-silver.com)

Type: Related
Auction: Sotheby’s New York, 19 October 2016, lot 634
Price: USD 3,250 or approx. EUR 3,900 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A Chinese Export silver entrée dish and cover, Hung Chong & Co., Shanghai, circa 1900
Expert remark: Compare the related design with bamboo rims. Note the different form and size (31 cm).

Expert’s note (added 27.02.2023): The artisan workshop ZHUO 卓 was responsible for making this, not Hung Chong. Hung Chong & Co didn't manufacture any silver, it was solely a retailer. Also, stylistically, it must be late 1920s to 1930s. (Information courtesy of Dr Adrien von Ferscht)
