A FAMILLE ROSE ‘BIRDS AND FLOWERS’ OVOID VASE, HONGXIAN MARK, REPUBLIC

China, 1912-1949. Of baluster form, with flaring mouth, depicting a pair of black tailed birds perched upon branches and surrounded by large flowering peony and chrysanthemum blossoms, and buddhas. Vines of the buddha’s hand tree spreading across the vase. Two butterflies on the backside. The base with a four-character mark Hongxian Nianzhi in iron-red and possibly of the period (1915-1916), or earlier in the republic period (1916 - ca. 1920/25).
Provenance: From a private collection, Massachusetts, USA.
Condition: Restored condition. Manufacturing flaws, glaze wear, tiny surface scratches.

Auction result comparison: Compare a related famille rose vase, with a Hongxian Nianzhi iron-red seal mark, also dated to the republic period, of similar size (27.3 cm), at Christie’s London in Chinese Ceramics, Works of Art and Textiles on 14 May 2010, lot 423, sold for GBP 4,375.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
