A CELADON GLAZED BAGUA CENSER, EARLY QING DYNASTY
清初青釉八卦紋爐

Lot details

China, late 17th to 18th century. The incense burner is heavily potted, rising from a splayed foot to a short, everted rim, and covered overall with an attractive lustrous sea-green glaze. The rounded sides are decorated with the Eight Trigrams between two rows of bosses below the neck and above the foot. The recessed base with an apocryphal four-character mark Chenghua nianzhi in running script, painted in underglaze blue. The foot ring left unglazed, revealing the burnt orange ware.

Provenance: From the estate of Gertrude Levy and thence by descent. Gertrude Levy (1883-1966) was a British author and cultural historian writing about comparative mythology, matriarchy, epic poetry, and archaeology.
Condition
: Very good condition with minor wear and manufacturing flaws, including pitting, dark spots, and glaze recesses.

Bagua, or the Eight Trigrams, is a symbol consisting of eight areas, connecting two neighboring corners of an octagonal trigram towards the center to form one gua. The center contains a yin and yang symbol. In Feng Shui, the Bagua map is used to stabilize, protect, adjust, or restore balance by analyzing and structuring any given space. Each section of the space is believed to relate to various aspects of life and is divided into categories concerning physical and emotional aspects of life such as family and career.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
