Japan, Kyoto, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
Published: Zacke, Netsuke von Meistern, 1989, Vienna, no. 59.
A lively depiction of a dog on a large, round cushion, scratching its chin with its hind paw, its ribs and fur are neatly incised and inked, and its thin, curved tail is curling. The bell (suzu), possibly a former plaything, now lies still beside it. The signature is placed within an oval reserve on the underside, with the single himotoshi running vertically through the center of the cushion. The underside bears the convincingly cut signature MITSUHARU within an oval reserve. The ivory bearing a fine patina.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and rubbing to high points.
Provenance: Galerie Zacke, 1989. A noted private collection, acquired from the above. A copy of an old expertise from Galerie Zacke, dated June 1989 and stating a purchase price of 39,500 ATS (or approx. EUR 6,100, converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing) accompanies this lot.
DIAMETER 3.7 cm
Literature comparison:
For a discussion of the carver see INSJ, vol. 39, no. 1, pp. 11-23. In the article, Max Rutherston illustrates two dogs with their pup (figs. 10 & 11) and a tiger with a pup (fig. 12), in each case the young pup is comparable with the present piece.
