Japan, Mid to late Edo Period (1615-1868)
The lobed kongōban, with irregularly curving sides, is raised on three short feet and bears an inscription on the underside. The handbell is of typical form, its body encircled with lotus-petal decoration and surmounted by an elegant handle formed as a four-pronged vajra. The three accompanying vajra feature central lotus-petal knobs and terminate respectively in a single prong, three prongs, and four prongs. (5)
Inscriptions: To the underside of the ritual tray: Dedicated to Myōken Shrine of Nakatsu Village. First year of the Kaei era, Year of the Earth Monkey (1848), April 3
HEIGHT 15 cm (handbell); LENGTH 11.5 cm (single-pronged vajra), 12 cm (three-pronged vajra), 12.5 cm (four-pronged vajra), 23 cm (tray)
Condition: Ver good condition with minor wear, casting flaws, and few tiny nicks. The handle of the bell is loose, as are the feet of the tray. Fine patina with minor malachite encrustations.
Museum comparison:
Compare a related bronze ritual tray, kongoban, dated to the 19th century, 20.9 cm long, in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, accession number 21.1614.

- Bidders must complete their due diligence and clarify all questions about the objects before the auction. After the auction, Zacke will not answer questions from bidders unless the purchase price has been paid in full. Of course, this does not apply to questions concerning shipping, insurance, customs, etc.
- A sale cancellation of any kind after the fall of the hammer is not possible. The only exception to this fundamental rule is our guarantee of authenticity [the Guarantee].
- A Guarantee Claim, however, can only be raised after the purchase price has been paid in full by the buyer and within 45 days after the auction day.
