A GROUP LOT WITH A SIGNED SATSUMA CENSER AND A KUTANI CENSER

Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912) - Taisho period (1912-1926)
The first censer with a compressed globular body, supported on three short legs and rising to a broad mouth with a flattened domed cover, carefully pierced. The exterior decorated with two panels depicting groups of courtly ladies within a richly appointed palace, elegantly dressed in voluminous robes. The panels bounded by differently shaped, gilt brocade patterns, echoed along the rim and base of the vessel, including geometric waves, scrolling tendrils, and bands of chevron and pointed oval leaves, all set against a deep midnight-blue ground and extending seamlessly onto the cover. Sealed to the base within a brown, rectangular reserve with the artist signature KANZAN and Dai Nippon, Satsuma [Japan, Satsuma], also showing the Satsuma Mon.
The second censer of hexagonal form, the body gently tapering toward the base, supported on three shaped legs and rising to a short, flaring neck. Each pair of sides containing richly enameled panels with gilt accents depicting scenes that include lush branches with cherry blossoms, a house nestled among trees, and rehearsing theater actors, all set against a glazed white ground. The panels bordered below by a band of pointed oval leaves and framed by gilt brocade patterns with small blue, green, and brown clouds on a scarlet-red ground, which extend onto the pierced cover, topped by a finial in the form of a Shishi lion seated on its haunches. Inscribed to the base Kaga no Kuni, Kutani sei [Kaga Province, made in Kutani].
HEIGHT 8.7 and 12.9 cm
Condition: Good condition with surface wear, sparse firing irregularities, some rubbing and small flakes to enamels.
Provenance: Private estate, United Kingdom. The art collection, comprising over 100 fine and eclectic Asian works of art, including pieces from China, Japan, and other regions, has been formed primarily 20–30 years ago.

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT. For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
