A JAMMU TERRACOTTA HEAD OF A FEMALE DEITY, 6TH-7TH CENTURY

India, Jammu and Kashmir, Akhnur. The head finely carved with a round face, a gentle smile below heavy-lidded eyes, the brows gently raised, the face flanked by elongated ears and surmounted by closely cropped hair.
Provenance: From the collection of Jean-Marc Andral, acquired in Rajasthan, India, in October 1990. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Jean-Marc Andral, dated 21 July 2024, confirming the above, accompanies this lot. Jean-Marc Andral is a Belgian manager based in Brussels and active in the healthcare industry for over 25 years.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, chips, losses, nicks and scratches, signs of weathering, encrustations, fissures, and firing irregularities.

Dimensions: Height 9.5 cm (excl. stand), 14 cm (incl. stand)
This head belongs to a group of excavated from a major Buddhist monastery and stupa site at Akhnur in the district of Jammu, where a series of both large- and small-scale terracotta reliefs decorating the monuments was found. The head displays a remarkable degree of naturalism and individuality which reflects the lingering Gandharan influence in the Kashmir region during the post-Gupta period.
Literature comparison:
Compare a related terracotta head of a nobleman, dated early 6th century, 16.5 cm high, in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, accession number M.85.284.6. Compare two related terracotta heads in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession numbers IM.3-1935 and IS.138-1961.

If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
