Korea, 9th century. Finely cast standing in samabhanga with his right hand raised in abhaya mudra and his left lowered in varada mudra, wearing voluminous layered robes cascading in graceful folds, the outer robe with long flaring sleeves, the undergarment tied with an elegant knot below the partly exposed chest and gathering at the ankles.
His serene face with heavy-lidded eyes below gently arched brows, his full lips forming a calm smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes. The smoothly finished hair rises over the domed ushnisha.
The reverse is hollowed with a circular opening at the back of the head, above an oblong aperture across the body, and just below a short tang.
Provenance: From a Swedish private collection.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, old smoothened losses, nicks, scratches, casting irregularities. The bronze covered in a rich, naturally grown, dark patina.
Weight: 552.8 g
Dimensions: Height 18.7 cm
The present figure exemplifies the refined style of Buddhist sculpture from the Unified Silla dynasty, which lasted from the late seventh through the ninth centuries and was a period of political stability when an international style held sway throughout East Asia.
The attire of the Buddha is in the Udayana style, characterized by the folds of the outer robe creating a U-form over the knees, which in this case is arranged in two parallel columns, and a Y-shape between the legs, as well as a long undergarment falling to the ankles.
Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze figure of Buddha, Unified Silla dynasty, 9th century, 23.8 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 54.106a, b.

Description: A gilt-bronze standing figure of Buddha, Unified Silla to Early Goryeo dynasty, 9th-10th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related manner of casting and modeling with similar expression, pose, robes, and hollowed back. Note the larger size (25.4 cm), the slightly later dating, and the overall remarkably well-preserved condition.
