A LARGE STANDING BRONZE BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI, LAOS,17TH-18TH CENTURY

Lot details

Late Kingdom of Lan Xang (1353–1707) or early Kingdom of Luang Prabang (1707–1893). The Buddha stands in samabhanga, both hands raised in abhayamudra, symbolizing protection, peace, and fearlessness. He is draped in a samghati robe, cinched at the waist with an ornate buckle. His prominent facial features include inlaid eyes, a broad nose, a subtle smile, and elongated, gracefully curved earlobes. The tightly curled hair culminates in a high ushnisha, crowned by a flame-like ketumala. The figure is positioned atop a tiered pedestal adorned with incised lotus patterns.

Provenance: A private collection in Toulouse, France, and thence by descent. Marambat de Malafosse, 14 December 2022, lot 96, sold for EUR 3,220, or approximately EUR 3,500 adjusted for inflation at the time of writing. A copy of the invoice, confirming the dating above, is accompanying this lot. A noted Italian private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Very good condition with some old wear, minor nicks and dents, minimal warping to base, and expected casting flaws. The bronze with a naturally grown patina, showing an exceptionally beautiful golden-brown color, and the surface with an unctuous feel overall.

Once you have pre-registered for a live online auction, you can see your intended spend and bid limit by going to 'Account Settings' and clicking on 'Live Bidding Registrations'. 

Your bid limit will be the maximum amount you can bid during the auction. Your bid limit is for the hammer price and is not affected by the buyer’s premium and VAT.  For example, if you have a bid limit of €1,000 and place two winning bids for €300 and €200, then you will only be able to bid €500 for the rest of the auction. If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
