MANDARIN FOLDING FAN WITH FIGURATIVE SCENES
Gouache, silk, ivory, wood
China, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912)

The 16 leaves are like the spokes of a wheel and are elaborately open-worked. The fan itself shows a very colorful depiction with houses and a park, including rich figurative court scenes. Painted silk is applied to all costumes, further all faces with painted, most delicately cut platelets of (presumably) ivory. In the surrounding borders are objects from the "eight treasures" as well as fantastically designed bats as symbols of longevity.

Dimensions: HEIGHT 28 CM, WIDTH 51.5 CM
Condition: Damaged condition; One of the leaves is deattached from the fan and a section of the image is separated from the rest. Soling, discoloration and losses
Provenance: From the collection of Jürgen L. Fischer, Ascona
