FIGURINE OF A COURTLY LADY
Glazed ceramic with painting
China, Sui (581-618) to early Tang Dynasty (618-907)

A very fine and nicely executed figurine of a courtly lady in a long robe facing completely forwards. However, the lady's posture is slightly slanted and she shows a gentle smile, and thus there is no sense of stiffness. She holds her hands in front of her stomach, over which part of a shawl hangs, the folds of which falls straight down. Her pinned-up hair with a small cap on the head conveys a sense of elegance. The honey-colored glaze of her robe is very beautiful. Some remains of the original painting.
