Guatemala, Maya culture, ca. 500 - 800

Stocky priest standing in a loincloth with his feet spread apart, the upper front of his torso also covered by a cloth. Around his neck is a wide collar. Typical for the Maya culture is the nose’s bridge which runs up over the forehead. The eyes are more like slits, the mouth open in the act of speaking. One arm is bent, the hands are not depicted. On the back, at seat-level, a round opening. The figure served as a whistle.

Condition: Good, age-related condition; remnants of old painting, weathering, scratches and likely partly restored area on the left leg
Provenance: Formerly part of the Harmer Rooke Galleries, New York, acquired in 1995, subsequently Galerie Alt-Amerika
