India, approx. 19th cent.

A miniature representation of the god Krishna* here portrayed quite animated as a crawling child – Balakrishna. One hand holds a butter-ball as he was keen to steel butter. Only the upper body is clothed, he wears crown and large moveable bracelets. Very finely executed and self-confident childly features.
Krishna as a boy, used to make lots of fun. He was keen on the butter-supply that usually hang from the ceiling. As he repeatedly climbed up to reach for it, his mother tied him between two trees. Thus, he rooted them out and suddenly heavenly spirits appeared to praise him.
