Depicted is a Chinese boy (Karako) holding down a fan, presumably trying to catch a butterfly. The boy has typical tufts of hair on the sides and a very Chinese and incredibly detailed facial expression. His robe is ornately decorated with neatly incised scrolling vines and with vertical lines on the collar and hem. Signature TOMOKAZU 友一 in a rounded reserve on the underside. A fine ivory netsuke from the workshop of Kano Tomokazu in Kyoto.
