A FINE BUDDHIST LION GILT-BRONZE SCROLL WEIGHT, KANGXI
China, 1662-1722. The mythical beast finely gilt and cast in a recumbent position with alert expression, its head raised and turned to the left, its jaw closed, the furry mane flowing along the neck, its two small cubs climbing on top of its spine which terminates in a bushy tail.

Provenance: English private collection.
Condition: Superb condition with some wear to gilding and a few tiny nicks, old wear and traces of use, good patina.

Weight: 544.2 grams (the bronze) and 60.1 grams (the base)
Dimensions: Length 9 cm (excluding base) and 10 cm (including base)

Note the finely incised detail work to the lambent flames, bushy tails and manes of all three lions. Matching dark hardwood base carved in openwork to depict a craggy, layered rock from which two small flowers spring. (2)

Auction result comparison: Compare with a another giltbronze Kangxi scroll weight of almost identical size, and related incision work to tail and eyes, at Christies Paris on June 9th 2015, in Art d’Asie, lot 221.
