POT WITH MAKHARA AND BIRD
Wrought silver
Tibet, late 19th to early 20th century

Slender teapot with multiple tiers. The tall, curved foot, around which runs a ring of lotus leaves is flared. On the body are the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism and, on the neck, multiple lotus leaves and meanders, the mouth flared like a plate. The lid with a bayonet closure is vaulted and has a bird on it with its wings spread and opulent tail plumage as well an eyelet in its mouth, from which there hangs a red gem. The S-shaped, curved and delicate spout stems from a makara's head.
