AN INSCRIBED QING DYNASTY BAMBOO BITONG BRUSHPOT WITH PLAYING CHILDREN

This finely carved Bamboo brush pot shows calligraphy in high relief reading (= translated) ‘Image of the playing children’ as well as a seal mark. As the titling promises a group of children is depicted playful in a palace garden setting with a central peach tree where the youngsters are also harvesting the fruit. Beautiful nature portrayals such as mountains, cleft rock formations or a lotus pond round off the decorative appearance of this scholar’s item. Top rim and base, which shows three little feet, are segmented from darker stained bamboo, whereas the central part is carved from one lighter colored piece of bamboo wood.
