An excellent and elaborate ivory netsuke of a most popular Japanese motive - the Komachi. She is forming part of the Rokkasen (the “Six major poets of the 9th century). The present Netsuke shows a superbly crafted depiction of Sotoba Komachi seated on a tomb (symbol of mortality). Masakazu masterly carved the details showing Komachi as an old and poor woman with bare feet, worn gowns and a hat. She is leaning on a stick and seated on a tomb. Himotoshi to tomb, signed Masa-kazu beneath.
