TSUBA WITH YOSHITSUNE AND BENKEI

Of oval form with both hitsu, rounded and slightly raised rim, decorated on the obverse in a flat relief with the famous battle of Yoshitsune and Benkei on the Gojo bridge of Kyoto where young Yoshitsune defeated the strong Benkei, who later became a trusted fellow. The reverse presents the bridge, clouds and one pinetree; details highlighted in silver and gilt nunome.
