A PAIR OF FIGURAL POTTERY TILES DEPICTING ATLANTES, XI XIA DYNASTY

Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by QED Laboratoire, Marseille, on 15 June 2010, reference no. QED1023/EC-0701, sets the firing date of two samples between 600 and 900 years ago, consistent with the dating above. A copy of the report accompanies this lot.
China, 11th-13th century. Each rectangular tile molded in high relief with a stout muscular figure seated in a relaxed pose with the right hand placed on the raised knee and left hand placed on the lap of the resting leg, wearing only a sash draped diagonally across the shoulders, neatly pleated and falling elegantly on the rotund body, and adorned with armlets and bracelets. Provenance: From a private collector in northern France.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear and firing irregularities. Tiny losses, structural cracks, chips, nicks, signs of weathering and erosion, minor touchups.
Weight: 3,018 g and 3,087 g
Dimensions: Size 22.4 x 17.5 cm and 22.8 x 16.5 cm
The atlantes’ faces with grim expressions carved with large eyes boldly staring into the distance, well detailed with thick furrowed brows, a broad nose, and pursed lips. The hair is neatly incised and tied away from the face.
Literature comparison:
Compare a related tile with a dancer, c. 1100 to 1400, in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, object number AK-MAK-1413.

If you try to place a bid that is higher than €500, you will not be able to do so.
