THE JAIN SAINT PARSHVANATHA

The 23rd (second to last) Tirthankara of the Jain religion thrones in meditative pose under the shield of a seven-headed Naga. Below him are lions facing each other as well as human figures, smaller than the animals. On the arched with ornament designed nimbus are two lateral standing companion figures as well as – at eye level of the Parshvanatha – two further Jain saints in same pose as the main figure. Closure in form of a tiered stupa, inscription on the back with the dating Samvat 1308, which is 1251 in our time, good patina.
