AN UNUSUAL KONDH TRIBAL BRONZE OF A BIRD
Copper bronze
Eastern India, Kondh Tribe, late 19th – early 20th century

The bird is depicted here with short tail and flight feathers, a long beak and two feet which form a bridge. Particularly rare and unusual is the spiral in the middle of its body, which is very similar to the spirals used in Bastar bronzes. The bird has a somewhat whimsical expression with bulging eyes and a wide-open mouth.
